Yikes, it's the week that won't end... and it's only Thursday morning! I'm not saying it's a bad week; to the contrary there is a lot of good stuff going on. Just it's piling up. Today was a meeting with admin for the University's QEP and student connect program to help design the future of the University of South Carolina. It was fun, and I was glad to see a lot of people reacting with such passion about important issues, but also that so many expressed how much they feel their experience here at USC is a positive one.
My invitation to this panel comes with the apparent fact that I'm now the most requested instructor for economics and int'l business in the programs I work with. It's great to know the students like me, and that I've got the gift of teaching them in such a way as to make them care about the subjects, but damn! The hours, man... aren't human beings supposed to sleep every now and then?
Yesterday was a pleasant swing of events for international week... Jules prepared an exotic mushroom soup, served with, of course, his addiction... truffles. In this case, truffles that cost (I shit you not) $2,500 per pound. Yeah, don't see myself whipping up any more of that in the near future. On the flip side, there is the preparations for the upcoming photo shoot for the university's birthday celebration. Me and crew, in full, glossy color. Hooray for the program!
Last week my family endured the loss of my Aunt Ann... she was a great woman, and we will all miss her terribly. She had a great fighting spirit, was an amazing cook, and, of course, a USC fan. I always remember with fondness going over to her house for Christmas dinner when I was younger... it was crushing to find out that she was planning to have Christmas dinner again this year (for the first time in nearly 7 years) just so she could do it for the whole family, one last time. Her funeral was fittingly beautiful, and my uncle is holding up as well as can be expected, and the family is making sure we do what we can to hold things together for him. At least it gave me a chance to catch up with some family I haven't seen in a while.
Well, back to the optimistic-ish side of things! Back before those sad events, a few days, it was the fun of me, the staff and the volunteers all going out for drinks and, god help me, dancing after homecoming. This after I spent the majority of the evening bartending out of the goodness of my heart. It's okay, though... met some great people. Some of the only people, point of fact, who could get me dancing at a club. Still seems too simple to me, though. Amidst all of this there have been papers, research projects to do, reports to file, and so much more.
My Gamecocks won the SEC East, for the first time. Seems the chicken curse is dead (let us pray!) There's something stirring about hearing Sandstorm and 2001 echo across downtown every day at 9, 12 and 5. Tomorrow is more students to teach, and a meeting to put some final touches on the marketing plan the team has prepared for the Columbia Airport. We present it to the exec's Monday after next.
Well, it's now six days until my birthday (this year I'm just going to celebrate an anniversary of the previous birthday), a week until Thanksgiving, and, thank God, only two weeks until I set sail on board Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas for Bud Light's Port Paradise cruise. Three cheers for winning free trips to the Bahamas! Oh, and I can't forget to mention this on behalf of my friends on the football team- that Saturday, while I am attending a concert on Coco Cay, and recovering from time in Nassau, my Gamecocks will be in Atlanta competing in the SEC Championship and a chance to go to the Sugar Bowl. To quote my friend Christian- "War Eagle? Sorry Aubbie... there's only one bird coming out of the Georgia Dome alive, and that's the Gamecock."
One last note- this Friday, at 11pm, my friend Karo's taking his comedy to a new level: it's the premier of his one-hour special "the rest is history" on Comedy Central. If you're not watching it, well... you suck. No excuses! Watch it. It's an awesome show.
