Fun and Travel and Personality

What a couple of days! Back to Charleston, and then to North Carolina, just in time to head back to the old hometown to see mom for her birthday. And boy oh boy, did I ever overshoot for her birthday gift! Her sisters read the blog, so I'm not going to reveal anything yet, but I'll post a picture of the present probably Monday or Tuesday, depending on how busy I am.

I made time on the trip home to see, at last, one of the things on my bucket list that just had to be done: a space shuttle launch. I was there to see the Atlantis lift off on the last shuttle mission ever. I was glad to see so many people turn out for the event. I think this day in age too many people don't care about the space program. I've always liked the program, and the history behind it, and just how much was accomplished to get us there. Here's a pic of the launch, just for kicks:

Let's see, what all else is happening... got a harsh but much needed personality check while I was in Florida. I've become way too passive. I've fallen into that bad habit of being careful about what I say, to keep from offending someone, or over worry about what they'd think. To avoid conflict even if their every action is pissing me off. That's not who I am! And I've been in this trap since sometime in 2008 or 2009. Started worrying about other peoples' perspectives moreso than my own, and I can't figure out why looking back. The people in my life did so because of who I was, so why change it? I guess in the end it's just one of the fallacies of human nature.

So it's time to get back to the brashness of my roots. If there is anything that my friend Scott Mallick reminded me of, it's the fact that there is no point in catering to others. If you don't flow with who you really are, you're doing nothing for anyone else, and worse than nothing for yourself. Scott: I appreciate the insight and the confidence you have in me, you pirate. You remind me that being yourself and not worrying about the rest is still the best way to make both friends and enemies... but the friends you make are truer, and the enemies are both more sincere, and less relevant.

Randomness: I was going back through my facebook profile doing some cleaning now that I'm getting started with Google+, and came across some posts and whatnot, and dear God I can't stop laughing. Also, came across two things that I wanted to post just for kicks:

What’s your military callsign? Federal Express: Like the delivery company that shares your name, you'll get the payload there on time and on target. Still, the packages that you deliver wouldn't be welcome on a FedEx truck. Knock knock. Who's there? MOAB. End of story.

(Funny part is, my call sign for anything involving the military was actually Questman for the last several years, but I love the humor.)

Awesome Quote: "Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end”

What else, what else... while in Florida, I got called out for 'wedding crashing/spring breaking.' At the same time, I was told just how awesome it was. So I guess that's a good thing. Made some deals that are going to be fantastic for business for me, and with just a little legwork will have a great retirement set in stone before I ever even touch my thirtieth birthday. Not half bad, if I do play my own arrogance card!

Had a chance to eat at Cafe Martorano again, and hang out for a little bit with Steve Martorano while there. Awesome guy, and the food is still beyond belief. I picked a copy of his book up while there, and got told by Steve: "Promise me you'll read it! Some people think it's a cookbook, it's not! It's a story about life and how tough it is to make it in this fuckin' world!" Gotta love it. And in his style, he autographed the book "To Bryan- Yo Cuz! Thank you, and don't breaks balls!"

Umm... crap, I'm too tired to be writing right now, and I'm sure before long my friend Austin Scott will call me out on poor grammar or something. Joys of an old rivalry between newspaper staffers. Oh, on writing: I just finished Dracula: The Un-Dead- fantastic book, and unbelievably well-done story. It's one of the few I'd recommend to everyone.

Well, I'm gonna wrap it up for the moment before I zone out! I promised myself to get a little rest before heading home for mom's birthday, anyway. Have fun and try to stay out of trouble, loyal R&C- I've spent quite enough time trying to keep people off the hook this year!
