October 5th, statistically speaking, is the most common birthday in the world. And yes, I didn't forget today. I always keep my word. 'Nuff said about that.
First of all, my good friend Jules Pernell passed away late last night/early this morning. He was the executive chef and lead culinary educator at the University of South Carolina. He was good man, quick to laugh, easy-going, and always made it a point to try to not only teach his students, but to make them passionate about the art behind cuisine. He was only 61 years old. We were supposed to get together and tailgate before one of the USC Gamecock football games this season. Jules Pernell, CEC, 1950-2011. You will be sorely missed.
My friend Mike Tracy's great uncle died, though he had a good long run of it. And now, low and behold, Steve Jobs, of Apple Computers, has passed away. The world lost a visionary today.
Seriously, what a day. I hate to even have to write today. But there it is.
