Latest Fun

Good grief it's been busy lately... but mostly in a good way. The bad stuff, though, has been pretty harsh- my high school friend Zack Mullan was killed when he was hit by a truck, Msgr Roth passed of cancer, and today one of my good friends' mom was killed in a motorcycle accident. Prayers for all of them and their families, please.

In other news on the downside, I apparently broke my left leg, though it's not a typical fracture. I didn't even notice! Man, the sucky part of having superpowers. Oh, and I've blown time and money being great to a friend that the rest of my friends think is terribly ungrateful; and much as I hate to admit it, I'm beginning to fear they are right. But hey, I've done awesome things for her. Glad she's had a chance to see a little goodness.

ON to the good stuff! Between all the work stuff over the last several weeks, I've settled on two new grad classes for summer. Social scene has been nuts, but a lot of fun. A week or two ago, I was actually having a party over here and a few of us made our way down to the dock afterward. I went to stick my phone in my pocket and missed, and it went into the lake. End of that one, right? Well, no, actually. The screen on the damned thing was still lit, on the bottom of the lake! I stripped down to my boxers, dove in and rescued that thing. Broke the surface victorious, and lo and behold, the phone actually still works perfect. Makes no sense to me, but most everyone there that night is switching to the iPhone after seeing that happen.

Been out rafting a lot lately, which gets me more than just a little bruised up, scraped up, etc, but fun. Did some rodeo rafting last week with just two of us on the raft, which is a blast and a hell of a workout, but moreover you get dumped in the drink A LOT. Yesterday was the real kick, though... they picked my crew as the ones to take a news crew out. Took the cameraman and the reporter out on the first run, then dropped the cameraman off to do some shots from shore. There are some pics from the trip here: http://www.photos.usnwc.org/Rafting-Photos/05-23-11/130-300/17194777_Lfr4ff#1304080429_bxwzRbX

That particular one is me and Tasha up front, Katie (the reporter) and Eric (the cameraman) in the second row, and Jess in the third. Plenty more pictures in that album from both runs.

Fun to take a news crew out like that... we're supposed to be on a segment on Fox 8 tonight. I'll post a link once it's uploaded to their site. I love the USNWC, but I wish they'd let me wear my own PFD. Those red things are effective, but dear god they look horrible on everyone. To say nothing of the tan lines.

Random thought: Why the hell is T-Mobile still airing advertisements trying to bash AT&T? They are, or at least are about to be, part of AT&T. Besides, don't hate on the iPhone. I don't think anything T-Mobile has could go diving to the bottom of a lake and still work.

Let's see here, what's coming up, in brief... helping the family out, vacation to Florida (and a little time with my friend Ana while I'm down there, with luck). hopefully a business trip to Belize (that will be 90% pleasure). Estonia, Russia, the Ukraine, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Monaco in early fall. Finishing the paperwork for my PhD program entry along the way. Probably a little bit of work and fun in there somewhere. Hopefully going through some of these bottles of wine; I feel like refreshing at least half of the rack for some reason. It's summer, so I think the whites and roses will dwindle fast.

I think that's about it for the moment... oh, don't get me wrong, there's tons more to say, like the stuff about my upcoming ten year high school reunion, but I just feel like relaxing for now, plus I've been putting in enough time on the keyboard working on the books! Plus I've got to bank some sleep at some point. Tomorrow night I'm getting a bunch of buds together to hit the midnight showing of The Hangover 2, after which I'll only get about two hours of sleep before I have to head to Aiken to help a friend.

Stay out of trouble, loyal R&C. Don't do anything I'd do! And have some fun this summer, live a little.

Oh, one extra pic, just for kicks:
